Burst pipe in a wall in Englewood

When a pipe bursts inside a wall, most of the water stays out of sight. We find exactly how far it spread and dry the cavity without tearing out more than we have to.

A pipe that bursts in a wall is sneaky. You might hear water running when every faucet is off, see your water bill jump, or notice a baseboard that feels damp. Behind the drywall, though, water is soaking the insulation, running down the studs and spreading along the bottom plate into the next room.

How to tell if a pipe burst inside a wall

Paint that bubbles or peels

Water trapped behind the paint pushes it out, often low on the wall.

Damp or swollen baseboards

MDF baseboards puff up and split along the top edge when they get wet.

A musty smell

A closed wall that stays damp starts to smell within a few days.

Running water with taps off

If your water meter keeps spinning with everything closed, there's a leak somewhere.

What to do right away

  • Shut off the main water valve
  • Turn off power to outlets on that wall if they're near the wet area
  • Don't start cutting the wall open yourself. You might miss the wet area or hit wiring
  • Pull furniture a few feet away from the wall and take photos

How we dry a wall without tearing it all out

Map the moisture first

Moisture meters and thermal checks show how far the water went up the drywall and sideways along the wall. That map decides everything else.

Choose the smallest fix

If the drywall is still firm and the water was clean, we can often drill small holes at the base and push dry air into the cavity. If it's soft, stained through or the insulation is soaked, we cut a straight line above the wet mark so the wall can dry and patches cleanly later.

Insulation and framing

Wet fiberglass insulation usually comes out, because it holds water against the studs. The studs and bottom plate are dried in place and checked before the wall is closed.

The room next door

Water in one wall often reaches the floor and the wall on the other side. We check both sides and the ceiling below if there is one.

Why you shouldn't just close it back up

A wall can look dry on the outside while the studs and insulation inside are still wet. Close it too early and you trap that moisture, which is how mold grows inside walls. We only give the go-ahead for repairs once the readings inside the cavity are back to normal.

Questions about water inside walls

Can a wet wall dry on its own?

The surface might, but the inside of a closed wall dries very slowly. Wet insulation and studs can stay damp for weeks, which is long enough for mold to grow.

Do you have to cut open the whole wall?

No. We measure first and open only the wet part. Many walls dry with small holes near the base or a single straight cut above the water line.

How do you find a leak inside a wall without opening it?

Moisture meters, thermal checks and the pattern of damage on the surface tell us where the water is. The plumber then repairs the pipe at that spot.

Who fixes the pipe inside the wall?

A plumber repairs the pipe itself. We take care of the water damage: removing what can't be saved and drying the wall so it can be patched.
